United pushes back on city timetable for O'Hare expansion

United Airlines is pressing Mayor Richard M. Daley to slow the expansion of O'Hare International Airport.

In recent weeks, representatives of Chicago-based United urged city officials to scrap the 2014 target completion date for the $8-billion project, delaying construction of two new runways until air traffic increases.

United's move marks a new setback for Mr. Daley in his decadelong quest to expand O'Hare, the centerpiece of his legacy as mayor. In addition to myriad lawsuits that have held back the project, airline objections effectively relegated the new western terminal Mr. Daley envisioned to the back burner.
